Were these brave men pushing their luck by their brazen operation that went beyond the bounds and was sure to push the button with their captors resulting in the murder of 50 escapees. By 1944 was there much point in escaping as everyone knew the war had turned.

Escape was a means of staying sane in POW camps - a focus for the efforts and intelligence of men with nothing to do. It 'damaged the enemy', in the sense of the effort it took to re-capture them, but that was often a secondary objective.

They were deeply shocked by the shooting of 50 men - it had not happened before, and was against the Geneva Convention, which had been observed by the Germans (at least for Western Prisoners) pretty well up to then.

I am sure they did not see it as 'sure to push the button', but the nature of these men was such that they might well have carried on anyway.
