how do i find my grandfathers war number?

    hi can anyone help me I am trying to find my grandfathers war number.... I have a ceritificate but no number. his name is William Frances Doherty from Castlederg Co Tyrone he enterbed sevice in August 1914 he was a private for the 3rd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. he was approx 19 yrs old

    I'm afraid this may not be a lot of help but I've checked the medal card index on the National Archives website and there were no fewer than 14 William Dohertys serving with the Inniskillings in WW1:



    Only two of them have a second initial quoted, and since it's "J", at least we can count them out. You could have a look at the other 12 records to see if you strike lucky and find something that might allow you to identify one of them as your grandfather. There's no guarantee you would, though, and it costs Β£2 a time.

    I've also checked the WW1 service records which are available through Ancestry but didn't find anything that looked like a match. (A lot of records were destroyed by German bombing in WW2, and some of what's left is partially burned.)

    You could try the regimental museum: somebody mentioned on another website that the staff are very helpful. The fact that you know William served in the 3rd Battalion will help them narrow down the search:
