    Hi everyone,
Do you remember Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ 2 series Time Commander, wich went on air from 2003-2005?
I sure do, it was an epic series where contestants used CAΒ΄s RTW engine and battled out historical battles in front of historical experts.
Famous Battles from the show was battle of Cannae, Gaugamela, Bibracte, Watling Street, Hastings etc and it ran for two seasons.

Technology has changed rapidly over the last 5 years and CA has just recently released their title Napoleon Total War with a stunning war game engine capable of rendering everything in the empirical and Napoleonic Era, and not only land battles but naval Battles.
So we could see the team contestants not only trying to defeat Napoleon at Waterloo, but also battle it out in Trafalgar commanding Nelson or as Americans trying to fend of the British Cornwallis.

Anyone interested in Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ taking up this idea, please comment. We could send mail a petitions list to Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ if enough people like the idea.

    Cheers!

Time Commanders was a fun series but a lot of that fun was derived from the "contestants" being woefully ignorant of the history they were reenacting and at times being bereft of any tactical skills. My favourite episodes are the TA colonel who insists on putting everyone on a hill and staying there only to be shot to ribbons, closely followed by the schoolkids who referred every decision to "sir".

I do not know if using the newer TW engines would be as effective. The ancient battles were more compact and could be easily followed on screen. The larger fights of the 18th - 19th century could prove too confusing.

I would certainly enjoy a rerun of the series or perhaps refights with a new enhanced Rome engine? Why not have two competing teams (with some background knowledge) rather than relying on the AI?

As an aside was there another series "Decisive Battles" that used the same graphics engine - shown on the History channel?

I liked it and would not mind it returning, as long as they don't give it to Richard Hammond.

It's not that I dislike him, I just felt he had no interest in any of the history of the battles.

That guy that did the first series was better.

I enjoyed it, too, even though some of the teams hadn't got a clue - I recall the Boudican Revolt one, where the team took the Romans off their commanding hillside position, then wasted time trying to kill Boudica under the impression this would cause her army to become demoralised and collapse.

I recall Channel 4 had a similar idea, but used actual (retired) generals and more recent battles, with traditional wargaming techniques. I think they only did three, though - Balaclava, Waterloo and another. It was called 'Game of War', IIRC.

Well if there was a Battle of Jutland one I'd volunteer! If I was Beatty I would make sure I had the 5th Battle sqd in at the beginning and keep the range long.If I was Jellicoe would I risk a turn towards instead of away..

I saw some ot the series, and I seem to recall that the only one (or at least one of the few) where the outcome was different from the actual result was Waterloo.

Amazing what a little coordination will do!

Oh dear, 'Game of War' presented with desperate enthusiasm by Angela Rippon. The only episode I saw was a Crimean War battle - Balaclava?

They did it as a figure game but with unpainted 54mm figures which made it look very ugly. Without pretty uniforms (or nice computer graphics) I don't think wargames can make it as a spectattor sport. Also the retired generals didn't seem to have any more clue of what they were doing than the punters from 'Time commanders.'

Not a good a very good advert for the hobby of wargaming I'm afraid.
