My Grandfather name was Frank Lawson Smart, born Apr.2/1901 in Kirriemuir, Angus Scotland, however when the war broke out he resided in Brechin with his wife and 2 children. He was stationed in Blackpool? an Instructor responsible for the barrage balloons with the R.A.F. When I notified R.A.F. Disclosure Sections in Sleaford, Lincolnshire they told me they had no records by that name. He is shown on the Muster Roll in an Almanac in the Library in his home town as being on the Muster Roll of 1941 giving his name, address and what he did under the R.A.F. If this is seen in an Almanac this is of importance, so that tells me there must be something out there for him. He was a skilled machinist and mechanic. Please can someone point mein the right direction as I have been searching for 1 1/2 yrs. without success but I won't give up.

    Thankyou
    All the best.

Two things occur to me. One is that he joined up using a different name, or a variation. You could perhaps try Frank Lawson?

The other possibility is that he a civilian instructor. The RAF did make use of skilled civilians. As a 39-year old he would not have been liable for immediate call-up in 1939.

If I may add a thought to this, ballons were maned by many units mostly auxilliary. So also were the WRAC and a number of T.A units used for this. Could be worth looking into.

Thankyou fr your imput. If he was a civilian instructor am I able to obtain any information on him. If so where would I start. A long time friend of my Grandparents feels he was in the R.A.F. Volunteer Reserve and then became a Sergeant-Instructor for the Barrage balloons.

    All the best
