can anyone tell me which battalion a soldier was in from his service number?
He was in the Kings own yorkshire light infantry and his number was 21879.
Thanks

Short answer is no - the service number was unique to the individual, and would apply to him whatever battalions or other units he served in.
But if you have his name and service number, you could search for his medal card on the National Archive site, and if they have it, that might record which battalion (they do not always).
