Anyone have information regarding paratroopers like those in 'Band of Brothers'. Such as tactics, battle plans etc.
Jump out and pray . . .
If you mean British paratropers then look at Pegasus Bridge and Merville Battery.
In Ranville cemetry there is a grave of a young paratrooper and his paratrooper dog buried together.The only known military grave with an animal in it.
I would definitely recommend a visit to the Pegasus Bridge museum, and the Merville battery.
We were fortunate in getting a guided tour at Pegasus Bridge with a curator who had met several of the participants. He was able to describe the taking of the bridge in great detail, pointing out bullet impacts on the bridge, and linking these with precise incidents in the battle.
Of course, if you're in that neck of the woods a visit to Arromanches beach and museum is also highly recommended.
Vera,
It actually seems they're quite common.
Interesting link for war dog lovers :
Delrick53,I'm sorry I should have stated the only known animal buried in a human war grave.
Hi
Just for the record there is a dog who has a
Statue erected in his honour and was known by
I would think every service man that entered into
the Port of Simonstown South Africa during WW2,
he was adopted by the Royal Navy and was given
the rank of Able Seaman.Nuisance as he was known
did not see any war service'but gaveloyal service
to thousands of Sailors by escorting them to the
train station when they were "DRUNK" all you had
to do was hang on to his collar and he would DRAG
you all the way' it was uncanny how he could
pick up a Drunken sailor who would be totaly
incapable and steer him down to the station and
possibly saving him from being adrift from his
ship'Nuisance was the only dog allowed aboard
any H.M.S Ships.
Max,
"Band of Brothers" shows the attack on the German artillery battery at Brecourt Manor, an attack which is still taught at West Point.
[the link has these guns as 88mm,which intelligence had identified them as, in fact they were 105mm howiters]
combat report of a battalion attack carried out by the 504th PIR [82nd Airborne]at Cheneux in Belgium;
and the experiences of a 101st paratrooper on D-Day
btw HBO,Steven Speilberg and Tom Hanks are producing a new miniseries, "Pacific", which follows the US Marines from Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima;
Vera, Delrick & Nick,
There's a website dedicated to Bamse, a St Bernard of the Royal Norwegian Navy;
Have you read "Band Of Brothers"?? Great book, gives a decent insight. "On Silent Wings" concentrates on glider operations and is brilliant.
