Where can I find information about the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles please? I have a soldier in my family tree who was KIA on 16 August 1917 and I'm interested to find out which battle and what happened. Tried searching on internet, but can't seem to find what I want, ie what happened on 16 August 1917. He is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Where were the Royal Irish Rifles on that day?
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful. Thought this was the best forum to ask, rather than the family history one.
Hello Marmitegirl,
I suspect you might do worse than have a look at this place, and perhaps ask your question there,
Good luck.
The best source would be the battalion's War Diary, in the National Archives at Kew. Here's the catalogue entry:
Some of them are available online, for a small fee, but unfortunately it doesn't look as if this is one of them.
1/Royal Irish Rifles was part of the 8th Division (, which on 16 August 1917 was taking part in the battle of Langemarck - part of Third Ypres/Passchendaele.
The link on the Great War Forum was interesting - someone setting up a website devoted to RIR, but unfortunately the link to his site doesn't work.
However, I've deduced that my soldier died at the Battle of Langemarck which took place between 16-18 August 1917. This was a useful website
Many thanks for your help.
