I have been watching the coverage of the above on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ. The MC on the stage that has introduced everything and read out the names and titles of the personnel that lay the wreaths etc should be repremanded for the following:

    "Would the English Prime Minister..."

I am afraid that i thought that the soldiers, sailors and airmen that were part of D-Day were from all the countries that make up the United Kingdom and not just England.

I think that an official apology should be published to the Welsh, Irish and Scottish personnel tha were also part of the D-Day landings

The Prime Minister stated in his own speech that he was speaking on behalf of all the United Kingdom and Great Britain, not just England.

I am afraid that I think that demanding an official apology for a simple slip of the tongue is quite petty on a day like today.

Yes the prime minister did mention the troops of the United kingdom as being the best in the world
as for anybody having to apologise thats just a
load of codswallop, I'm an 87year old Normandy
Veteran and my best mate was a Scotsman and I was
very proud to have him as a mate' does anybody
think that we Englishmen could have managed to
win that war just on our own,I had shipmates of
mine in the Bismark action that came from SOUTH
    AFRICA-CANADA-SCOTLAND -WALES-IRELAND to name
just a few' we were all comrades and you will not
find that sort of comradeship any where in this
world to'day'so forget the apologies and just
thank the lord that we won that war to'gether and
be glad that on this small Island we stood all
that the Germans could throw at us'and turned
round and gave him a "B-y" good hiding,

    Good post Old Hermit.

Also - the inability of some people (particularly foreigners) to differentiate between England and Britain and Britain and the UK etc works both ways. Sometimes educated foreigners get it wrong even when they are trying really hard to get it right. For example in 2006 during the FIFA World Cup the England squad was based in Baden-Baden. The Mayor of Baden-Baden guested them at a civic reception and made a speech welcoming the 'British national team'. smiley - blush

Vizzer as you said good post by Hermit.
It is not just others that cannot differentiate between English Welsh And Scotts, more often than not so do some of our Press.
Heard of a visitor from the USA at Wimbledon asking how to get to Wales in Scotland.
So lets just forgive these slips and remember what we are asked to remember, OUR freedom.

It's probably headline news in some of the Scottish newspapers today, some of them seem to have whole departments monitoring every TV and radio channel in the hope of catching out someone. Doesn't one of the Scottish universities have a media department that also does this.

It could be that he had been speaking with French and other foreign officials all day and, like it or not, they often say English rather than British.

I am always amused when the same people who will get hot under the collar about mixing up England/Scotland/Wales/Britain/UK often go on to refer to The Netherlands as Holland.

    That's right JMB.

Also - how many times did people say 'Russia' when they meant the Soviet Union or how many times did people say 'Austria' when they meant the Habsburg Empire.
