Depends on your criteria for 'victory'.

IDF 'won' the body count roughly 100:1 but they alienated public opinion across the world and allowed Obama to put pressure on Israel for real steps towards (as opposed to endless talks about) a viable two state solution.

Since Netanyahu and Leiberman cannot even use the phrase 'two state solution', we can expect more US (Obama) action to wind-down the influence of closet Israel-backers in the State Department.

If I'm right, the IDF demolished a Palestinian ghetto which they surround and control, but lost the moral high ground in the Middle East.

War is not a game of numbers, nor necessarily even of controlling the ground.

War, to use the well worn phrase, is politics by any other means.

First, you must decide what the IDF's intention were. I suggest it was threefold, though others would say differently :

Firstly, and most immediately, to eliminate the firing of rockets by Hamas.

Secondly, to damage Hamas's ability to fight in the longer term.

Thirdly, to damage the ability of Hamas to command support in the Gaza strip.

In the first two, they had some success, in the last point, it probably did not work. We must also remember that Hamas are also in a civil war with Fatah, and the fighting probably skewed the balance of power in this.

I doubt that it really changed Mr Obama's policy towards Israel. Actually, many people think that the Israelis acted when they did so that they would not have to deal with the new president. So it was, if anything, a case of being the first country to act against the new president's wishes. The Israelis knew that Mr Obama was not going to be so 'iser friendly'.

    smiley - ok
Since when a trespasser and a proven burglar is expected to have any ethics or respect to human rights ? , the Israeli coward offensive on Gaza was another episode in the criminal series of the Jewish entity on Palestinian land and people.
Since its elligitimate fabrication on Palestine 61 years ago , Israel never seized to act the role of a terrorist State. A State that adopts terrorism as a way-of-living policy . As long as it gets the support of the UNSC members , the stage is going to witness more coward assaults and more bloody offensives by the Jewish assembly on Palestine. I'm just wondering how could God let something so horrible and so hideous injustice to occur and persist for that long. Why didn't He find for his beloved sect a remote piece of land where they would practice their viciousness away from decent and honest peaceful peoples . Is He there ?

    Rply to you sevenskies.
You can call it a cwoardly attack but in fact israel did damage Hamas badly but not in 100%.

I don't see any reason why to call it a cowardly attack?!!! becuse israel was bombarded by rocket for 8 years.and all of the rockets landed in civilian places.lets put britian in that situation what the would do?

And TimTrack-the goals for the operaion were clear by the IDF,Hamas just can't admit that they lost the war from the begining.
Israel had to fight strongly, offensivly aginst Hamas to prove them that Irael is still the the commanders.

Mr.Obama with all respect he is a muslim!.he helps them more then he helps Israel. When he said that Jerusalem must bu divided between Israel and arabs he "broke" the alliance with Israel.

This isn't the place for discussion of the present situation in the Middle East or the US President's choice of religion - this is a History board.
