Normandy was ultimately chosen for the D-Day landings and were successful.

However, would an equivalent landing in the Pas de Calais region have succeeded or do you think it would have been a failure? Assuming it wouldn't have been a failure could it have shortened the war or would it have got bogged down even more than it did in the Bocage? Would it ultimately have saved allied lives?

Admittedly many Germans expected the landing there but Rommell certainly expected it in Normandy and planned accordingly but there were many advantages to the allies landing in the Pas de Calais.

    Darenatwork,
Your last paragraph says it all. There are a profusion of works about the invasion, I think 'Overlord' by Max Hastings is a very good place to start. In case you are not aware - the days of the week chosen for the invasion where given the code letters 'A' 'G' with 'A' for the first possible day. There was a man who is reputed to have sent the following message to Whitehall ... "Thankful that we did not go on 'B' day. The French might have misconstrued our intentions!"
