In their excellent book on the Polish Kosciuszko squadron the writers, Lynne Olson and Stanley Cloud, remark that of the THREE great civil uprisings against the Nazis, two occured in Warsaw- namely the Jewish ghetto uprising in 1943 and the Warsaw rising of 1944.

Regretfully the writers did not state what the third great uprising was (perhaps they consider pre-liberation Paris?)
I've got a feeling that I've overlooked some dead obvious answer.
    Can anyone help?

    Hello nastychestcough

as the book is Polish-specific and as it mentions Warsaw - then perhaps the 3rd rising was another Polish rising i.e. the Bialystok ghetto uprising in 1943.

Otherwise your Paris suggestion would seem to be the best bet.

I read that book a few years ago. I had a feeling that they were referring to Paris (broadly I'm guessing that they meant broad urban uprisings against the ruling Nazis rather than partisan operations such as those that occurred frequently in the Balkans).

I picked that book up whilst on holiday in Krakow and was not that interested in Polish history before reading it. However that remains probably my favourite history book (not that I've really read that many - hence my tendency to lurk rather than post round these parts)

    Thanks for the answers.
Perhaps the authors were refering to urban risings as you state.
I agree with Charles about the book. A riveting read- it also really drove home the tragedy of the Poles plight.
