I discovered today thru research that my GF's Victory and British War Medals were "Returned" which I assume meant that my GM had moved. Can anyone advise what is likely to have happened to them once returned (assuming they weren't "claimed" at a later date)? Would they still be available or were they melted down/sold/lost in the mists of time? I wonder if they can be traced now?
Would be grateful for any insight, thank you!

Try the Medal Office, they should still have all records, However they did move premises recentley and take a staff cut, thus they may take time to respond, there was a lot of fuss about all this when the Iraq medal was being issued from 2002/03 due to the back log.

Also look up soldier Magazine they have had articles on this matter in 2007/08

In case lindavid's advice doesn't help, perhaps the RBL might be your best bet

    All the best, Nielsen
