The news today that the Brits are to pull out of Iraq must be historic, I served there on Op Telic, (1) Thats before they gave the tours numbers.
I did come across whilst in the Basra area a British War Grave Cemetary which was dated during WW2 and a swimming pool built by the RAF in 1932.
I wonder how many times we are to pull out of Iraq, and since the US forces are to take over the British Zone how long it will be before we have to go back in to undo what thay have done.
A little like southern Afghanistan in which I witnessed tha total different approaches by each force and the resulting reponse from the locals.

The last time the British left Iraq was on 26 October 1947. They returned on 20 March 2003. That was a gap of over 55 years. Hopefully this time the UK armed forces won't have to return again.

What are the odds within a few years some European jurisdictions are governed by islamic fundamentalist anti-west politicians?

The RAF managed to hang on a bit longer. 6 Sqn was the last squadron out, on 6 April 1956, and the last unit (the staging post at Basrah) did not leave until 8 June 1959.

Considering this thread is about British Troops leaving Iraq not for the first time, i find it very strange that the Brits feel they are the victims!!
Britian as far as I know hasn't been invaded in over 1000 years, yet as a nation it has invaded, looted, butchered and humiliated so many nations and people.
How is it then in Britian people feel they are the victims and the good guys?
Are people that emeresed in political war propoganda can't see that their nation is one of historys biggest criminals?

Its not bad but evil, a major difference.
Can anyone tell me if there are estimates on the number of deaths as a direct result of the British empire?

One.
Mrs Eugene Barguest of Heptonstall. Died from excessive Mafeking 18th May 1900.
Now, if you could excuse me. I have to get back to forcing black people onto boats and pitchforking babies.

Is there any reason why we are not taught the crimes of the British empire in history lessons, but are told about how evil Hitler was?

Crimes of the British empire? What did we do double park Australia?
Hardly crimes. A spot of twocking and a bit of agravated piracy. They wouldnt even get you an ASBO these days.
O.K
Did the British empire have anything to do with the population of American Indians?

Yes. We taught them handy life skills and knowledge like scalping, and not to buy second hand blankets from us.
But after the rebellion over there we let the Americans take over the responsibility of shooting civilisation into them.

Yes,Like Cleckheaton. Filled with Yanks during the summer they go there to breed. They really really miss out on not being English and getting to sell opium to the Chinese. Over compensating for feelings of national inadequacy I'd say. but they are harmless folk if addicted to arming bears.
