Anybody have some spare cash to purchase this piece of history?
I always fear that things of this ilk will end up abroad and it shouldn't happen.
I don't care where it ends up - it just good to see it saved and restored back to airworthiness.

Depends. The plane belonged to South Africa during its working life, not Britain.
I can see the point of Britain owning British icons like gthe Lindisfarne Gospels, but this spitfire isn't the only version available, there are many others already in Britain:
If it were the last of its kind, maybe it should be bought for the nation, but it's not. There's probably a better argument for South Africa to reclaim a piece of her history!
Are those South African markings? I thought they were Czech...

It was found as scrap in South Africa and restored here. I think that is enough for it to remain here.
I have had a love of Spitfires from the age of 4 or 5. The more working examples that can be seen the better.

To me that says the restorers can dispose of her how they like.
Spitfires are part of the history of so many countries that I don't think we have the right to hog them all. It would be good for it to stay here so there'd be more chances to see one, but other places which flew them and helped fight our war deserve a chance to see their history in action too.

It's probably too late but I think the MoD should keep one of every vehicle/aircraft that's being retired and put them in a museuem for all to see.
I appreciate its harder with ships though.

if you're willing to wait until 2012 we could always put them in the London Olympics swimming pool

Ask the forces, they believe the MOD already do this.
Having had to use vehicles armour and arms that should have been in museums years before we thought ourselves living museums.
Frank.
they filmed the aerial scenes from the Battle of Britain scenes locally
i still have photos of Manston airport full of yellow nosed me109s
they said that the MEs were still in service in the the spanish airforce and i think the spits were from from the indian airforce
where have they all gone ??
st
The 109s were indeed from the Spanish Airforce, but fitted with R R Merlin engines. The Spits and Hurricanes belonged to mostly private owners.

Just think how good a full line up of this would look (and I know aviation mueseams do their best)....
Gloster Meteor, De Havilland Vampire, De Havilland Venom, Hawker Hunter, Gloster Javeline, English Electric Lightining (an early Mk and a late Mk), SEPECAT/BAe Jaguar, Hawker Harrier, Tornado GR varient, Tornado F3.
Then if possible - an F-86 UK version, an F-4 UK version(s), a mock-up of a Eurofighter.
The RAF through the ages. Impressive when you add a Valient, Victor and Vulcan.
And to think there's probably not a Valient left, can't be many Victor's either?
Both Victor and Valliant can be seen in the odd Aircraft museum, but sadly they will never fly again.
