Hello
I would like to know your opinions about nations or states who terrorise their neighbours or even their own residents.
I know history may point to many nations who have been involved in this type of terrorism, but I would like to focus on todays world.
I know the definition of terrorism may be vague for some but I feel it needs to be defined for states as well as for individuals or groups.
Can you think of any nations who may be considered 'Terrorist States?
Thanks

In which case you need to be somewhere other than a history board!

History is being made as I type.
When I said todays world I thought it was be easy to understand I was referring to the states which exist now and are invovled in State Terrorism.

I'm with plotinlaois on this one. You are pursuing a Current Affairs issue, not a historical one. If you want to have this discussion, go back to your usual current affairs arena.
Have a nice day.

O.K
Lets change it slightly.
Which nations over recent history have acted as Terrorist States?
Can the British Empire be known for being a terrorist state?

Depends what you mean by recent history, and also how are you defining a terrorist state. Do you have a particular definition in mind?

The UN has repeatedly tried and failed to come up with a treaty definintion of terrorism, mainly disagreeing over the issue of resistance to occupation.
I'd go with the group that says terrorism is by definition the practice of non-state actors. A state can no more be guilty of terrorism than a single man can commit adultery or an atheist blasphemy.
States can and have practised terror as an official policy over the centuries, but since they are states it was never their sole or main raison d'etre.
There have also been governments formed by people who were unrepentant terrorists in the past; Begin, Shamir, arguably Mandela. There have also been numerous examples of states sponsoring terrorist groups, most of which have turned out to be a lot like the old lady who swallowed a fly, etc.
Regards the British Empire, broadly speaking it was always based on seeking the co-operation and co-option of local peoples, and where it was coercive it was typically within strictly enforced legal limits, with a many a terrorist imprisoned and then negotiated with in later years. This is in marked contrast to the other European empires all of whom were far more brutal by degree and by routine.

Is this a thinly veiled hint to start a row about Israel/America? If so, this really isn't the place for arguing modern politics.

Generally I'd say no. The British Empire was far to big to be controlled by terrorizing the local population. For instance India was ruled with a ratio of one European for almost half a million Indians. Although the Amritsar massacre can be said to be terrorism in the absolute sense: killing to scare people into submission. General Dyer admitted it himself that he thought shooting the protesters would save India for Britain and accepted that he might suffer the consequences of an immoral act - though all that happened was that he was sacked.

Correction Stanly,
History is being made just after you type. And most of it can only be considered after a moment(a year*, a decade*, a century* ... delete where appropriate)or two of careful consideration, otherwise it is speculation and nothing else.
Hi all,
This discussion is best suited to the Five Live world affairs board:
This is too off topic for the History boards.
