Hi all,
Would be interested you know your thoughts on good overviews of the Korean War. Is there a good - reasonably accessible general history you'd particularly recommend?
Cheers
Andrew

Max Hastings does a good job of seeing it from the UN side, and the chapter in 'Rise To Globalsim' by Stephen Ambrose has a handy summary of the whole Truman-MacArthur confrontation.
Not sure about anything that sees it from the Korean or Chinese side, though.
Hi Andrew,
Well the only book I have on the Korean War is, funnily enough, The Korean War by Max Hastings. It's an excellent account of the war, covering why it happened, what happened during it, making mention of all the countries involved and what happened after the peace process.
Hi both,
Many thanks. I'll look at reviews of the Hastings book. Odd it hasn't been revisited in more recent years - perhaps next year will yield a crop of new perspectives...

There's the 'Korean War Almanac' by Harry G. Summers who also authored the 'Vietnam War Almanac.'
And David Halberstam's "The Coldest Winter."
And then there's Richard Hooker's "M*A*S*H."
Thanks WC - if I can call you that - very helpful.

Max Hasting's book is readable, and easily obtained, but Michael Hickey's "Korea - The West Confronts Communism" is better, and more useful if you are looking for a starting point for further research. Hickey served in Korea as a junior officer and puts the Commonwealth contribution in the context of the wider war.
Brian Catchpole's "The Korean War" is another general history of the conflict by a Brit who was in uniform at the time, and is also worth a look.
For an overview from a US author, Alexander Bevin's "Korea - The Lost War" gives a critical analysis.
Those are general treatments - if you want recommendations for specific units, or the RAF and RN, shout.
Ooops, Bevin Alexander
G Edward Griffin, Fearful Master has a wealth of information on the Korean War, and other UN-managed conflicts.
read this - trust me it is superb
lofty large - soldier againat the odds
2 books in 1 - ordinary soldier in korea - taken prisoner - then went into sas

Andrew, I want to recommend you a book of Samuel Wells- ' The Lessons Of The Korean War'.
