An open letter to the Moderators on this site.
I have recently returned to this forum and noticed a disparaging posting from one of the members concerning the search facility on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ WW2 Archives.
I tested it out for myself and find that the writer was 100% correct. The search facility is painfully inefficient and completely useless if one is searching for a particular article.
I write as one who posted over 100 articles on the site before it was closed for further postings and consider that the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has renaged on its earlier promise to make it a searchable archive.

Hello Ron
the search facility reminds me of the so-called 'Advanced Search' facility on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's 606 site. The Beeb must have had thousands of complaints because they were forced to rename it just 'Search' and even now it's still less than useless.
P.S. On a separate matter - how do people in Cockfosters pronounce the place name? I've often wondered about this because I once heard someone refer to it as 'Coefsters' but suspected that this was just an affection as they didn't live there.
regards
Vizzer

Hi Vizzer
Pleased to read that it is not only me who is disgusted at the "non-search" facility
With regard to:"how do people in Cockfosters pronounce the place name? I've often wondered about this because I once heard someone refer to it as 'Coefsters' but suspected that this was just an affection as they didn't live there."
I've lived there over thirty years and its always been referred to as COCKfosters
Regards
Ron

On a pedantic note, I think you mean "affectation" i.e. an artificial behaviour or mannerism in dress or speech designed to set one apart from others rather than "affection", a warm sympathtic feeling. I'm sure one can have an affection for Cockfosters without having an affectation in pronouncing it!
The only proper names I know where the 'k' sound is silent is the name "Cockburn" and the place name "Kirkcaldy" (pronounced "Keer'coddy") but these are Scots rather than English affectations, I believe!

hello Allan
yes - I meant to write 'affectation' rather than 'affection'.
The 'Cockburn/Coburn' model was indeed that which seemed to be the one which was being used for Cockfosters. Thankfully, however, Ron has but that query to bed.

Vizzer

Gentlemen
While a learned discussion has been started up on the merits or demerits of how to pronounce Cockfosters I see that my original posting has been removed and referred to the moderators
I wonder on what grounds ?
Surely not my criticism ?
Confused from Cockfosters

Good afternoon Ron, everyone,
I've passed this on and am making queries about the status of work to fix the search facility. The WW2 People's War front page does carry a message saying that work is in progress to fix the problem.
I'll let you know as soon as I get any up-to-date information. Having worked on the project myself categorising 1000s of stories I can understand your disappointment that the site isn't at its best.
Please bear with us.
Kind regards
Andrew

Disparaging?
Flippant, yes. Mildly sarcastic, possibly. But disparaging, no.
Still, I will be pleased if it does get fixed, I'm trying to use the archive as my daughter is studying WWII, and finding anything on it at the moment is hugely difficult.
