Have professional historians actually decided/agreed or not exactly who was to blame for the cock up of the Charge Of The Light Brigade?
Each book I read on this historic event seems to blame someone different. And I think by now after all these years studying it they should by now have someone definate in mind with the evidence to prove it.

who was to blame for the cock up of the Charge Of The Light Brigade?Β
Well, it was a cock-up but what an inspiring and courageous one.

    The usual suspects are:

    1) Raglan, for his failure to realise that the 'guns' to which he was referring, that could easily be seen from his high vantage point, could not be seen from lower in the valley where Cardigan and Lucan were waiting with the cavalry.

    2) Nolan, who, when asked by the cavalry which guns should be 'retrieved' from the Russians, is alledged to have made a broad expansive gesture in the vague direction of the massed Russian artillery at the end of the main valley, instead of specifying the few guns being carried off by a smaller Russian party in an adjacent defile.

    3) Some histories also note that the 'cock-up' of the near suicidal charge was made more likely by the intense animosity and competition between Cardigan and Lucan. This made it hard for them to look at one another and say: "this order from Raglan is barking, we'll be cut to shreds".

"Lord Raglan wishes the cavalry to advance rapidly to the front, follow the enemy, and try to prevent the enemy carrying away the guns. Horse artillery may accompany. French cavalry is on your left. Immediate."
