Are you thinking of novels or non-fiction? Nothing wrong with a bit of Nevil Shute written at the time of the war.
Pat Barker's Regeneration series is wonderful, though concentrating on men damaged by war or preparing to go overseas.

At the moment I am reading (that's not quite true, I read this occasionally) With the Jocks, by an English officer, Peter White, with a Scottish company who are fighting in 1944 along the German/Dutch border. It is very good and gives a very detailed picture of conditions and events and personalities, as well as the philosophical and social concerns of the writer, who comes from a pacifist background, if I remember rightly, and finds some aspects of war very difficult. But he appears to be a very good and popular leader with his men, for whom he has in return a great deal of respect.

Not being a war person I have a bit of difficulty with some of the terms and language.
But generally it is very very good. Not a quick read.

    Cheers, Caro.

    Hi Caro,

I've read that book too, 'With the Jocks'. It's an excellent book, written by a decent, honest man. Looking at his war and those of his companions is a humbling experiece. It made me so sad when their regular 'one man army' Joney was killed by a direct with an '88. I know I won't spoil it for you because you are told early on Jones dies.

To address the initial posting, Leonard Chesire also, a great front line leader, albeit in the RAF also wrote a wonderful memoir, called Bomber command (or something similair)

One of the most haunting book I've read is 'the railway may' by (?) Lomax. It tells the tale of his capture and harrowing ordeal at the hands of the Japanese during WW2. I cried reading it.

If you are really interested in reading about WW2, I suggest you contact Francis Edwards Co at Hay on Wye , they have a great selection of books, I purchase books from them quite often, even though I am in Australia.
    Good luck in your search
