General reader; please be aware that a common problem associated with 'the weird world' of 'electronic eves_dropping'; is the reaction of certain, so called 'members of the security and intelligence community' ( in particular; American Citizens with State Registration) who insist that the whole subject of 'Signals Intelligence' is VERBOTEN. Even on such 'quaint' subjects as STATION X; as described in the cinematic release: ENIGMA. Wait till you start discussing the VERNONA FILE...
ps. as for my penny's worth. Please note that OPERATION GOLD was not quite the failure most people were led to believe; as described in the Ian McEwan novel: 'The Innocent'. As far as the Naval Signals Division were concerned; the 'TANK Regiment' had the last laugh... Off - line, the Warsaw Pact Summer Exercises were conducted with RADIO ie. WIRELESS and ENIGMA INTEL; read by STATION X as it were: 1950's style... The field telephones remained on their handsets...

Dear brother or sister from the Netherlands,

now you are a little bit exaggerating (aan het overdrijven, over-driving).

    Warm regards,

    Paul.

This is a bit of a confusing one.
How is the world of Sigint one which cannot be discussed?

Very strange. Firstly, the Warsaw Pact usually used Russian designed/built comms equipment, which wasn't Enigma.

As for the "weird world of electronic eavesdropping", well, I supposed it could be seen as weird, but as one of those who used to be sat in the back of an APC with a headset on listening to bleeping noises, it's just a matter of physics, and while physics is a very dull subject, it's not taboo.

    Cheers
    DL

re. 'Ex Spooky Sigint person'. Please note; Whether discussion was entertained with NIA (National Intelligence Agency) or not (and I'm inclined to think that it was not - given that the OLD BOY NETWORK didn't work with the NAVAL DIVISION, COMMONWEALTH FLEET, BRITISH NAVY): the CENTRE FLEET and the very old fashioned TANK Reg. that survived CAMBRAI, 1917 - the murders associated with BOVINGTON CAMP in 1937 and the SECOND DEBACLE - were active in WEST BERLIN during OPERATION GOLD. Particularly the Wm.FOSTER & Co. Ltd. daughters and the son - in - law. All seen by AG at the SIS CABIN / OLYMPIC STADIUM; whilst the presevation NATIONAL TRUST Detail was being signed and sealed at HARDWICK HOUSE, DERBYSHIRE by the Commander / WRNVR: herself...
ps. Whether 547 Signal Security Section, NSD (Naval Signals Division) operated in concert with NIA is unknown. As far as the NIA are concerned; the person to have asked was the former President of the United States of America; Richard NIXON. His detail vis a v. GREECE 1946 and the VENONA FILE was 'proper'. With respect; To those that still remember the quote; 'No whitewash at the Whitehouse', the 'weird world of electronic eves - dropping' and its attendent DIGITAL EXCHANGE: are indeed a 'taboo'.

    What's Operation Gold?

Apart from that, I didn't really understand much of your post. Sorry.

NB. All old story but one told to me in childhood by my father; Harold John Wall (deceased Saturday 25th September, 1971), whilst staying at 'The Greyhound': Corfe Castle in 1967. As far as the expression; 'eves - dropping' is concerned: I was led to believe it derived from EVE listening to the SERPENT as described by JOHN MILTON in the collected work known as PARADISE LOST. Of course it can be spelt 'eavesdropping' but this may derive from the 'English Civil War' when people were caught standing at an open window in an upstairs room beneath the eaves, listening to the conversations held at the front door or in the courtyard below...

You were led incorrectly. It's nothing to do with Milton or Eve or the Bible at all.

Of course it can be spelt 'eavesdropping' but this may derive from the 'English Civil War' when people were caught standing at an open window in an upstairs room beneath the eaves, listening to the conversations held at the front door or in the courtyard below...Β

This is getting closer to the etymology. From www.etymonline.com:

eavesdropper - 1487, from O.E. yfesdrype "place around a house where the rainwater drips off the roof,"

NB. All old story but one told to me in childhood by my father; Harold John Wall (deceased Saturday 25th September, 1971), whilst staying at 'The Greyhound': Corfe Castle in 1967Β

Sorry, but why do we need to know the name of your father and the date he passed away?

    Um, er, OK.

    (Puts tinfoil hat back on)

Just wondering whether this thread is a "Let's see if we can trip Echelon" thing, either way, I'm off.

    Hi all,

It is rather hard to see where the historical application of this discussion lies - or that it will reach one.

To that end I'm going to close this thread.

As per usual - if anyone wants to discuss the history of cryptography, station X, military intelligence in past conflicts etc etc you are more than welcome to start a new thread.

    Cheers

    Andrew
