Hi, I believe my Grandma worked in a munitions factory in Pudsey, Leeds in World War 2. Would any one know which factory this was or any other information about it?
Thanks for your help.

Snezzy -
this might have been the Vickers factory which was making Crusader Tanks in l941 - although there were a few of them as well as an MOD factory based in Leeds making all sorts of munitions
The English Heritage book Dangerous Energy lists explosive factories. None in Leeds in WWII but there could be some in the surrounding area.
There is a list of Royal Ordnance Factories here
Thanks for that will check out the Vickers Factory on google and see what I come up with.
Have just looked on google and wikipedia, which has led me to the co-operative wholesale society.
Now I know my Grandma worked at the co-op I just don't know which years - would it therefore have been possible that she was working at the co-op when war broke out and as her employers they transferred her to a factory to work on munitions? or am I getting the wrong end of the stick about munitions factories?
Thanks again

Snezzy - don't know what your thinking is on "munitions factories" but there was an on going advertising campaign to get people to work in a munitions factory as opposed to say - the Co-OP and others as munitions were a top priority and the men were being called into the forces thus leaving a gap in the workers and so many women - who until that time stayed home to look after the children - went to work making tanks - bombs - guns et al the "day care" system of looking after the children was instituted at about this time to allow those women to work.
Cheers

Thanks, I'd probably misunderstood what I'd seen on wikipedia in that the coop had factories for fillings.
My grandma definately went to Pudsey but it was more to do with castings. Does anyone have any clues at all where it could have been?
You will probably need to do some local research and perhaps ask some people with local knowledge. Almost every factory, however small, was involved in war work in some way even some quite unlikely ones. Many shadow factories were built which needed staffing.
