I watched a very long doc. on C 5 a few weeks ago, which shattered the story of Bader being downed by an air to air crash. It seemed that it was a Blue on Blue, and he was shot down by one of his own. anybody else catch it.

Bader probably knew it wasn't as a result of a collision, but his ego wouldn't let him admit that he was SHOT DOWN, even if it was by another RAF pilot!
One advantage he had was the ability to pull tighter turns without blacking out,because of his lack of legs. Saying that though, he was a remarkable man, who used his disabilty to show others like him what could be done. I was told a story about a soldier who lost his legs to a bomb. The young man gave up the will to live. His mother wrote to Bader asking him to write a letter to her son. He didn't Bader turned up at the hospital, and dragged the young man down to the pub.
