My Grandfather served in the Army Cycle Corps during WW1. I have located his Medal Record Card which shows he first landed in France on 14th April 1915.
Family tradition has it that he spent the whole war in France, most of it just outside of Paris.
There is also a story that he was amongst the infantry that followed the first tanks into action at Cambrai.

    My problem is this:
My grandfather was born and bred in Burnley Lancashire, as were all his ancestors, yet the most logical unit for him to have served with, the 5th (Cyclist) Batallion, East Yorks Regiment, never left the UK during the War.

What units of the Army Cyclists Corps did serve in France, between 1915 and 1918?

Incidentally, he was a private for the duration, and his regimental number, as given on his medal card, was 97.

    Thanks,
    Graeme

Unfortunately one of the best online reference sources is down at the moment because of server problems. Watch out for when it comes back.

Not sure why an East Yorkshire regiment is the most logical one for someone from Burnley?

Have you checked the other online military records - WWI pensions on Ancestry and I think they also now have some service records.

    seniorlabrat.

I believe there was an Army Cycle Corps attached to either the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment and/or the Loyal North Lancashire regiment. I also have a reference to an Army Service Corps being billeted at Blackpool during the winter of 1915/16. I will look up my records for that period and tell you what I can find.

Also try typing Royal Army Service Corps into your google. It should bring you to The Long Long trail, which may be a starting point for your research!

Alternatively, have a look at the Cenotaph at Burnley. Make a note of all those who are named who belong to the Cyclist Corps, and then find their names on the Commonwealth War Graves Commoission's website. That will give you an idea of which regiments left from your area of Lancashire.
