The government has at last decided to give an award to those brave civilian pilots, both male and female who ferried the aircraft from factory to front line. About time. But as most of these people are now dead, a case of to little to late. Hopefully the families of those who have joined that great force in the sky will be able to claim the same medal.

It seems to depend on having a MP who will campaign on your behalf but perhaps they could look into commemorating all the other organisations that did not receive anything at the end of the war.
Of course the biggest omission was a campaign medal for Bomber Command.
They keep calling the ATA pilots "Spitfire Girls" on the news when they flew a very wide range of aircraft.
There is a husband and wife from the ATA buried side by side in a war graves in Ayrshire.

I remember a wonderful story of an ATA girl ferrying a Lancaster, and two senior officers bumming a lift. At the end of the flight, they told her they were a bit bothered about flying with a slip of a girl, but soon settled down as they watched her reading a book as she flew. Not even the most seasoned pilot would do that unless he was at ease with the plane. She did not have the heart to tell them, she had never flown this type before, and the book, was Pilot Notes.
