Does anyone have any strong opinions, for or against, the mysteries that surrounded this man, the purpose of his visit to Britain in 1941 and his death, and subsiquent autopsy, in 1987.

Is this just another crack-pot conspiracy theory akin to JFK, 9/11, fake moon landings and alien encounter or does this hold some weight?

You'll need to outline which theories you're referring to in order for people to be able to say whether they feel that they are conspiracies or not.

I've 'heard', for example, that Hess' death in 1987 was 'hurried along' because the British wished to sell Spandau Prison (or at least the land which it was on) to a wealthy property developer who was promising a tidy sum for it. After they demolished the prison I think that they then went and built a shopping centre or some such on the site.

That said - and as with so many conspiracy theories - I have, of course, not a shred of evidence to back this theory up. smiley - winkeye

The oddest part I heard was the "official" story behind his imprisonment. For the longest time I remember that it was the USSR who insisted in keeping him the sole prisoner in Spandau, and refusing to release him. Later it was revealed that it was British authorities who refused to let him out.

Someone wanted him held silent forever.

So was he just a nut who had gone crazy when he flew to Britain to negotiate with a secret British cabal? Or was he duped by British Intelligence? Or was there a secret dialogue between British and German groups?

Or a bit of all three.

Fascinating speculation. The truth will be elusive, and probably never known.

Or as suggested, somebody close to Hitler wanted him out of the way and played to his vanity

There's a NAAFI supermarket on the Spandau site, so any thought that it was sold for big money are wide of the mark.

Officially Hess committed suicide, and although there are the usual conspiracy theorists, it looks more than likely that suicide it was indeed.

wasnt it because that spandau was in west berlin thought to be the reason the russians refused to allow him to be released

ie - they retained a foothold in west berlin ??

    1507George -

I can't think that there would still be a NAAFI in Spandau more than 13 years after British forces quit the city. Maybe there is. Those Berliners need their supplies of salt and vinegar crisps, lime cordial and brown sauce, etc just like the rest of us.

    stalteriisok -

The Soviet Union maintained a militarily guarded war memorial in the Tiergarten located in the British Sector. So that gave them a permanent foothold in West Berlin anyway.

Vizzer - I wasn't thinking of any theory in particular. I just think he is an interesting character. From his unceremonious arrival in Britain, the confusion in the purpose of his mission and the discrepancies in his autopsy.

I have no real opinion either way to be honest, just wanted to know what other people thought and if he really is justified as 'mysterious' or just misunderstood.

The Rudolph Hess flight probably has a simple answer.

Hess was with Hitler from his earliest days as an ex street fighter/thug and of limited intelligence. For all his loyalty to Hitler, by the time Hitler was in power, Hess had become an embarrassment.

After the British withdrawal from Dunkirk and the French surrender, it was obvious to everybody, including the Americans, that Britain had been defeated.

Churchill had made a speech about "no British surrender", but it was possible that others might convince him to at least keep Britain nuetral during the impending attack on Russia.

A back door approach by allowing Hess to fly to Britain might work and get rid of Hess as well.

The whole flight has the air of "a nod and wink", which could be denied or ignored afterwards, as it was. If Hess did achieve something, all well and good, if not Hitler had the loyal Hess out of the way.Hess probably never realised how he'd probably been duped.

I've always found it odd that Hess was able to make a long journey across Germany without any body sending up another plane to investigate a lone aircraft or even the radar plots being questioned.

Hess confounded everybody by survivng into his 90s and never apparently commenting on his flight or writing memoirs.

One lone airplane is seldom cause for a radar alert unless the radar staff are pre-ordered to look for it. Matthias Rust took off from Helsinki having filed a flight path to Stockholm. Before anyone knew it he buzzed Soviet-era Red Square.

    jinks,

I give it for what it is worth:
Hess lured by the British Intelligence?

    Warm regards,

    Paul.
