When was the first use of code names gien to military operations? e.g Barbarossa, Market Garden, Overlord, Torch, Desert Storm.
I cannot think of any code names used prior to the 2nd WW, in WW1 the Schliffen plan was just that.

    Hi Slimdaddy101,

According to Wikipedia, there were a few in WWI.

Here are a couple that they mention that have "Operation" as part of their names...

    Operation Hush (1917)
...was to be an amphibious landing on the Belgian coast, supported by a breakout attack from Nieuwpoort and the Yser bridgehead. Due to its heavy defenses and fortifications Operation Hush was cancelled and no landing ever occurred. The British chose Middelkerke as the site for the landings instead because its defenses were much weaker.Β

The website below goes into more detail:

    Operation Albion (1917)
...was the German land and naval operation in September and October 1917 to invade and occupy the Estonian islands of Saaremaa (Ösel), Hiiumaa (Dagö) and Muhu (Moon), then part of the Russian Empire.

Again, another website goes into more detail (but you'll need to click on the links Part I, II and III):

    Cheers,

    RF
