I have just found out that my gt granddad after WW1 joined as a mercenary soldier to fight for the White Russians against the Bolsheviks, does anybody know anything about this subject and are there any records anywhere?
Thanks in advance

Many Brits were sent over as part of an EF. Their details will be easier to get, but mercinaries are far more difficult - do you know which field he served. Here's some info, it's wiki, so far from the gospel.

Hi, thanks for your interest. I would assume that he was in the Sherwood Foresters as he was from Basford in Notts. Next time I go to Kew I hope to be able to get his war records.

I wouldn't assume that a regional based regiment...
For example, my Great Grandad was from Manchester, yet he was a Welsh Fusilier... It didn't really go by area apart from the old Pals battalions.
If you find any details i.e his regiment, service No. etc, it will help...
I forgot to ask, do you or any other members of the family have service medals?

Hi
No one has any I am afraid, he had a 2nd marriage after the death of my gt grandmother so we never saw anything.
Regards
Actually my grandfather born in western Macedonia that was still a part of Ottoman Empire joined the army at the age of 18 back in 1916 and he managed to miss all the battles in motherland because due to the treaties signed Greece was supposed to send some troops to join the White Russians. Hence he found himself in Russia fighting against communists.
That was a set back 25 years later when he had joined the EAM resistance organisaiton against the Germans but then soon found out it was riddled with communists and so he carefully abstained from the political side of it only to end up being accused of "having fought against the 3rd international" (someone had found the record), then his most close assosiation (a personal friend) was murdered and he was charged with the murder and thus he had to take his family and hide up in the mountains for 3 years until 1948 when communists started losing big time the struggle for power.
The White armies is always something of a riddle to me - at the end it is as if the armies enterred the Russian territory to make sure that communists would prevail...

Important to remember, it wasn't Red Vs. White - There were also Green Armies, Black Armies, and later the Blue Armies in Poland...
