Ihave recently found document from 1904 regarding my grandfather David Jones, he was discharged on medical grounds from South Africa on the 15th June. He was in the Royal Welsh Fusicilers he joined on the 9th August 1989.He served in South Africa for lyear and 104days and was awarded the Queens SA Medal. His total service was 5 years and 302 days. Please can someone help. Where can I get more information regarding why he was discharged and about his time in Cape Town. I also found a pebble that had been carved into a bible with the insciption naming a river and the date 28th feb 1902. Many thanks for your help. Lynfa
BOAR WAR......... Opps should have been 1889
And perhaps Boer war?
Who knows - those wild pigs can be very uppity you know.
Some wild boars were let out near us last week and we have been warned not to approach any such probably very uppity pig should we spot one in our gardens. Who on earth *would* approach a wild boar?
Rosamund.
"...Opps should have been 1889..."
I think you mean 1899, which would tally with a discharge date of 1904 after five years.
Do you have the name of the river ? I suspect it might commemorate a battle, or, failing that, the place your grandfather was stationed.
Rosamund -
Good question. Another uppity wild boar perhaps, some short sighted dog owner or a helpful boy scout - can't imagine anyone else.
You could try their museum:
It's based in Carnarvon, but they have an online query service. I'd expect them still to hold service records. And regimental museums usually have letters, diaries etc from most periods so even if you can't find information about your grandfather, they should have some contempory accounts from his mates.
