I was reading a very intersting book on the brief history of HMS Ark Royal(III).I never realised that she was a her damage control (pumps etc)was entirely electrically driven, with no auxillary back up in the form of say diesel powered pumps etc. What an amazing oversight?one hit could (and did)knock out her ability to stay afloat.
Any thoughts
VF
The fact that most of the people who could have saved her where among the first to be off loaded. Wouldn't have helped neither.
Nice to hear from you again Grumpyfred,
I just found that such an oversight was incredible. If the ship loses power she will sink as her pumps relied on the fact that that she had main engine/boiler power.
And as you pointed out, taking important members of crew off couldnt have helped.
VF
Some of the old hands may be able to confirm this, but didn't every member of the crew get off alive.
I beleive there was one fatality Grumpyfred.
Thanks V F
The original plans for Ark Royal III did feature diesel generators. In the final design these were replaced by turbogenerators of higher power. The final straw came when the air intakes for the boiler rooms flooded and the boilers went out. If they had allowed her to flood on an even keel, by counterflooding, she should have been saved. Wasn't she only 30 miles from the dockyard at Gib?
