Hello, could anyone give me information about BRITISH women nurses and ambulance drivers on the Eastern front in World War One?Were there any?
Would they have had chance to learn another language?
I am especially interested in the areas around the Czech Republic (as it is known know) perhaps some names of towns that were involved or caught up in the conflict. This is for some research I'm doing.
    Many thanks
    Stephanie

Sorry Stephanie, all the stuff I've come across on WWI nurses and ambulance drivers has centred on either the Western Front or the Galipoli campaign.

The Red Cross website seems to suggest that there *were* VAD workers on the Eastern Front:
Throughout the war VADs worked in hospitals, convalescent homes, rest stations, packing centres, medical supply depots and work parties. The Joint War Committee organised the volunteers alongside technical and professional staff and also supplied the machinery and mechanisms to provide these services in Britain and in the conflict areas of Europe, the Middle East, Russia and East Africa.Β

It might be worth contacting the Red Cross to see if they can help; they have a contact page for their museum & archives here:

IIRC, Flora Sandes started as an ambulance driver in Serbia, before she became a soldier in their army. Might be worth following up?
