Father-STEPHEN,Mother- MARY ?
Common law wife- ELLEN WILSON.
children- STEPHEN.ELIZABETH,THOMAS,GEORGE all called WHELAN.
Possible adresses- SOHO ST ,NEWTOWN, WIGAN or PLATT LANE,WORTHINGTON/STANDISH ,WIGAN.
Son GEORGES BIRTH CERTIFICATE is stamped ``ARMY PAY OFFICE PRESTON LANCS'' -FEB 1917.
Survived WW1 and died in 1941.
Previous occupation was coal-miner to which he returned post war.He appears to have suffered from his wartime experiences as he became aggressive and often mistook his children for the enemy.
Have you tried the records on Ancestry, also available via The National Archives (TNA), Kew, website. In addition TNA have several J Whelan files in the PIN (Ministry of Pensions) series for war injuries which might be of interest.
thank you for the info, i will try tna.

hi i tried tna but i must be thick i didnt find anything on pensions, got 6 possibles on medal cards.
You need to go the link (on The National Archives, Kew, website)on the left hand side is First World War records and then to Ancestry. However not all records survived the damage in 1940 and for those who remained in Army service after 1920 they are still (if the files survived)with the Ministry of Defence.
