Hi,
This question will be better suited to Wars and Conflict as it doesn't relate to the 20thC Battlefields programme. The members in W&C should be able to help you.
Cheers
Andrew
There will have been a formal RAF Board of Inquiry and the results would be in the PRO/National Archives in Kew. Given the date, I would imagine they are in the public domain by now. Beware however of attempts to blame pilots, especiually where there is some problem with the aircraft type - viz. the Chinook, which crashed in Scotland a few years ago with many int officers on board.
Don't know if this is the correct incident but, in my records I have that on 15 July 1954 two Venom FB.1's (Serial numbers WK408 & WK491)from 94Squadron collided during formation loop and WK408 dived into the ground and the pilot was killed.
The pilot of WK491 managed to abondon his aircraft safley.
The incident is reported to have occured 5m SE of Celle, Germany (Celle is near to Hamburg)
Can you let us know the surmame of your cousin so that I may update my records?
Regards Andy
Hi RAF_127Sqn
The pilots name was Hugh Sidney Honour, I was given the date of the collision as 26/6/1955 by RAF Records at RAF Innsworth, Gloucester.
Hi
This is what I have for the 26 May 1955.
1. 3 Sqn lost a Sabre F4 (XB633)at Eindhoven, Netherlands when it overshot runway and hit bomb dump and exploded.
2. 199 Sqn lost a Lincoln B.2 (WD131)7mls NW of Bitburg, W Germany. Collided with F-86D (52-3933) of 496th FIS USAF at night and crashed.
The US fighter pilot escaped by parachute, but the six crew on the Lincoln lost their lives.
The Lincoln had flown from RAF Hemswell, Lincs.
The crew were Flying Officer H.S. Honour, Flt. Sgt. R.V. Jarvis, Sgt G.V. Weller, Sgt. R.W. Walters, Sgt. G.W. Overton and Sgt. I. Jones
Regards
Andy
Hi Andy
Many thanks for the info
Dennis
Hi Andy
Since posting the above I have since learnt that this operation was covert and the reason for the collision is that the aircraft was flying without lights so as not to be detected.
The crew are all buried in Hemswell Cemetery.
Dennis
Hi DENBOY48,
Read this old thread with great interest as I am the daughter of SGT Gordon V Weller, the Navigator on Avro Lincoln WD131.
I am still living in Lincolnshire, as is my brother and our families regularly attend the squadron reunion in September every year at Hemswell.
As you say WD131 was on a covert operation and flying without navigation lights.
Apparentley they were testing a new radar/cloaking device. It obviously worked.
There was a memorial service to the crew of WD131 in 2005, which was well attended. SGT Jarvis's daughter and SGT Idris Jones wife also attended amongst many others and It was nice to chat over tea and biscuits arranged by Hemswell village council.
Hope you see this message.
Vivien
