Vichy France

  Hi
  Just where did "Vichy France Begin? and where did it stop? Where there many Germans in Vichy. How did it operate?
  I personally do not no much about the subject. Please enlighten me

  Vichy France was nominally independent with its own government under Petain. It covered south east France, with Germany controlling the Atlantic coast and the north. Effectively, there was little it could do without German approval but it did still control the French colonies. The Torch landings in late 1942 by the US and UK were against the French colonies in Algeria and Morocco were met by limited French resistance and eventually saw the colonies join the Free French forces.
  
  In response, Hitler ordered Operation Anton, which saw the occupation of Vichy France by the Germans and Italians. With only a very small army left following the 1940 treaty, the French army in Vichy avoided any pointless resistance. The capture of the remainder of France removed any ambiguity the French military felt about fighting the Axis against the policy of the official Vichy government.
