When writing an essay about the Vietnam War, what's the best name for describing the US's enemy? Vietcong? Vietminh? NLF?

Viet Cong can be translated as Vietnamese Commmunists Most books re concerning America's war describe them as such. - See previous posts on here re Vietnam There is a good book out there called Unheralded victory (ask at the library) Viet Cong units were also reinforced or made up solely of NVA (North Vietnamese Army

The Viet Minh were named after Ho Chi Minh (their leader) and fought against the French until they withdrew after their defeat at Dien Bien Phu. suggested you might reading The Last Valley (it 's a bit hard going and you may not necessarily have time

Afraid I don't know a lot about the NLF (National Liberation Front?) Did they fight against the Japanese occupiers against the Japanese during the Second World War under Ho?

I thought Viet cong were the South Vietnamese Communists (Viet Nam Cong San - Peoples Liberation front) or Charlie - and the North Vietnamese regulars were the NVA - 2 different things

The NVA were also formed into small Units and infiltrated into the South to fight as 'Viet Cong' and to help reinforce the Viet Cong units who were hampered by significant losses.

VC comes from Victor Charlie the American designation using the phonetic alphabet

Later in the war the NVA fought in Uniform more often

In my opinion the Americans Commanders on the ground were unable to totally defeat the Communists because they lost the propaganda war at home and were not alllowed to Invade the North for fear of bringing the Chinese or Russians into a full scale cold war
