As a matter of interest, does anybodu know when the first U. S. Eagle Squadrons were formed in the U K. Before or after the Battle of Britain, and whetre were they based. It came up in conversationn today, and typing in Eagle Squadron came up with nothing useful.

    GF

The first Eagle Squadron became operational in November 1940, so after the Battle. There had been moves to form it earlier, but these had been resisted because of the diplomatic furore it was creating in the US, in an election year. As the US was neutral, it was illegal for its citizens to fight for a foreign combattant. This did not stop the Brits encouraging any experienced flyer who wanted to fight to become a "South Canadian", but few of these men reached operational squadrons during the Battle.

Richard Hough and Denis Richards discuss the number of US pilots who flew with Fighter Command in the Battle - they identify 11. Some of these had dual British-US nationality, so were serving as Brits (Flt Lt James Davis, killed just before the Battle, had joined the RAF before the war).

It is a sobering thought that, of those 11 US flyers, only one survived the war.

(and, for the counter-Holywood record, none were Spanish Civil War veterans, and none went back to the USA to fight at Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec 41!)
