Are we a crueller species than our ancestors were or have we by and large moved on from some of the more barbaric acts of previous generations? In asking this question I think of the issue of torture, way previous wars and conflicts have been started, conducted, how prisoners (political as well as POW’s) were/are treated, how populations have been conquered and controlled.
I ask this frow a Western viewpoint and not so much to muse on the cruellest times in our history (though I have a few thoughts about that) but to see whether our past endeavours and struggles have installed in us an increased level of humanity and compassion or is the beast still lurking inside all of us?

Overall, I don't think we have evolved enough to claim to be civilised as history keeps showing how babaric we can be.
