i have to admit that i like both, not just because they both have long and interesting histories but because you are looking at the future of world politics. Japan is the second largest economy and is in the process of building up her Navy, again!!! also china is going to be the next Super Power without adoubt, her potential is totally under tapped and she is also undergoing a massive upgradeing of her armed forces! her population growth is at such a massive amount that she will need more land! watch out Austraila and Russia! I'd like to know which one you guys like best

Strange question on a history messageboard, and interesting that it should be placed on the Wars and Conflicts messageboard - are we expecting a conflict between the two in the future...?

without question, its just a matter of time, before they come to blows over the oil and trade they both want to dominate. if not them, india and china, as they have both already had two small border wars, which india came off badly in the last one....

jonsparta: With respect I must disagree with you. China doesn't want war with anyone for at least the next fifty years. China and Japan will gradually overcome the horror of WWII. The new generation doesn't remember the 40,000,000 Chinese that were slaughtered from 1936 to 1951.

China and India had a bried war while China took back the land England has stolen from her in the previous century. But neither of them will go to war against each other, neither has anything to gain.

    Japan each and every time

Got quite a few Japanese friends. Also now I think about I had a south Korean gf who was best of friends with a japanese, which given the recent press is kinda ironic.

My experience with the Chinese is all from my Uni days when what at times seemed like a mini China town existed in the flat above mine drove me to distraction, plus their manifest rudness irritated me. In fact the only people ruder than the Chinese were the French of the Somme region.

Plus I dont like the way that China is growing in power and influence in Asia and the implication of the one-sided tilt in Pekings direction. Also have issues with Tibet and the cultural genocide being practised there also in the north-western provinces as well although they get far less press.

Japan is a much reformed country trying hard to deal with a rising in nationalist policies in her neighbouring countries as well as trying to find a new direction in a new millenium

I fully support a full re-arming of Japan and the removal of the quite patently silly restrictions on their military from their constitution. It is now over 50 years since the end of WW2 and Japan is more aware now than of ever before of the precarious nature of their island state. However I think that they are the best counterweight to Chinese economic and cultural imperialism in the area

Japan by a country mile -= ever since watching "You only live twice" - a film shot in the 1960's but you only had to see the Ginza lights to know that it was the future - also love the "Bullet Train" and but I think Japan has a destiny to be a "global power" and recolonise the Pacific in a way that China will only resent and this will spark war.

For a nation to be a world power today it must posess three things: First; it must be physically large. Second: it must have a large, educated population. Third: It must posess large amounts of naturla resources. Japan has none of these. China and India have all of them.

Yeah but Japan could decide to send it forces out to those little islets and islands in the Pacific and develop all that oil that's there - and Japan has one advantage - if China rolls its army then the US will step in - how much from the Japanese before the US does the same?

NewcF15: Obviously we are in the area of "What if." But, IMO, the U.S. and China will be close allies within the next fifteen years. We will do nothing if the Chinese army chooses to attack someone. We have been traditionally allies with China. Before the Communists took over we were her best ally in the west. That will began again soon.

only if either America abandons all its principles or China abandons communism

The thought of the USA and China cosy in bed together fills me with a dread that the height of the Cold War fails to reach

Richie: I hate to tell you this, but we are already cozy in bed with China. If it was not for her, our economy would collapse. She is the country that is purchasing our treasury bonds.

Also, China gave up Communism about fifteen to twenty years ago. At this point she is a military dictatorship. IMO she will gradually evolve into something more demorcatic. But there is no reason for us to not be best of friends. She is the natural enemy of Russia. And Russia is more to be feared than China will ever be. Remember, since WWII China has been militarily the most conservative country in the world. By that I mean that she has not sent her troops beyond her borders except for Korea. At that moment we had an army on the Yulo River with a general begging for permission to invade her.

Other than that all she has done is to reclaim the territiories that Briton and France had stolen from her during the two previous centuries.

"since WWII China has been militarily the most conservative country in the world."

but China has never had a proper "blue-water" navy and until recently the PLA-A has been shoddy at best - but the moment it does get this equipment the dragon will breath fire.

NewcF15: I agree. But historically China has never been interested in a large navy. She has been very content with a costal defense force. I know this sounds silly, but the philosophy of China is, Why do we want anywhere else, we have the perfect part of the world. While I agree that there are teeth in that dragon, I don't think she will try military expansion. What I fear is her economic potential. Also, there was a comedian named "Redd Fox" who made the joke, "Once upon a time there were two Chinese, now look." I have the idea they will out reproduce us.

I also agree that China does not prefer military adventurism. Sun Tzu noted that wars are costly and victory is uncertain. Thus a general who achieves the nation's goals without fighting a single battle is better than a general who wins many battles. The Chinese do read their own scholars. They also have a lot of personal experience with suffering caused by wars over the 19th & 20th centuries.

I agree that China wishes to defend its current territory, including Tibet & Taiwan, but is willing to wait forever for Taiwan as long as no one else tries to settle in there.

I do not agree on the reproductivity comment. China has been working very hard to reduce its population for the last 30 years. The one-child policy has been enforced harshly for this reason. Their objective was to reduce 1.3 billion down to 900 million or so, and improve the standard of living by reducing the number of mouths to feed. They understand mass starvation from recent memory too.

I see China as a tough economic competitor, but not as a threat.

    Regards

    Brian

I personally see China and India as more than tough economic compettors. I see them whipping our behinds in the economic, manufacturing, soft ware departments in the next fifty years.

NewcF15: While I could not support the abandonment of Japan. I don't see any real reason for us to continue to back her. I have felt it is long since overdue that we withdraw our troops from Europe and Asia.

Chosing between China and Japan I would 100% opt for India. I am much closer culturally to them rather than the Chinese or the Japanese, be it capitalism, free market, democracy or not.

I do not like chinese restaurants as 1 in 2 I find insects and such and I do not like Japanese violent and utterly racist manners.... I think India forms a better paradigm (and not only because of Gandi). I think Indians (Hindus) are people that can comprehend both the west and the east and I would much rather see them on the top than China or Japan. Better see Bollywood than flying girls over mountains walking on air and water and not being able to get the meaning (just like their letters)....

I am kidding of course but then India is best.
