Does anyone have any information regarding 104 Squadron RAF? My great uncle died aged 21 on 1st November 1943. He was based in Malta at the time - his name is on the RAF war memorial in Valetta.

It would be interesting to find out details of missions he may have been on at that time.

104 Sqn was equipped with Wellington bombers. It had a detachment at RAF Luqa, Malta, at various times between May 1942 and February 1943, while operating from landing grounds in North Africa. On 1 November 1943, the squadron was based at an airfield called Hani West, about 100 miles south of Tunis. My source ("RAF Squadrons" by C G Jefford) implies there was no detachment on Malta by that time but could be wrong. Alternatively, your great uncle's aircraft might have made an emergency landing there, or possibly he was hospitalised in Malta and died of wounds?

During July, the squadrons of 205 Group (including 104) had been bombing airfields on Sicily, and communications targets - particularly railways - on the Italian mainland. On 1 August, Naples marshalling yard was attacked.
