I have been tracing my family tree for about 18 months now, and have discovered that a gt gt uncle of mine fought and died on the first day of the battle of the Somme, I have discovered by downloading his medal card from the National Archives site that he was awarded the Military Medal, I have since discovered this would have issued around the time of his death (information from the London Gazette).

My Grandma (his neice) was very surprised to hear that he had received this medal as it had never been mentioned before. Is it possible that his family were not informed as he died so close to the date of issue? I have not been able to find out any details of the reasons surrounding his award and I was hoping his army records might hold a clue. I know many records were lost during a fire but it would be worth checking, he was in the 2nd Lincolnshire battalion, I have his name and army ID number where is the best place to look for his records?

Is it possible to find out whether his medal was ever issued and who it was sent to? If it hadn't been issued would it be possible to claim it now?

I know a lot of these questions probably have very simple answers, but I don't have very much knowledge concerning this aspect of family research and would appreciate any help.

    Hi

Have you tried the National Army Museum?

    You could also try www.military-genealogy.com

Hope this is helpful. Good luck

    Tom

The award of the MM was listed in the London Gazette. You can search this on-line (try using his regimental number when you search). The announcement was gazetted usually some three months after the event for which it was awarded.

You could also try the 2nd Lincolns war diary, which is held at the National Archives at Kew. See if anyone at the Great War Forum has a copy: they wil be pleased to look it up for you.

The MM would have been given to his next of kin.

If he was an officer his service record may be in series WO 339 or WO 374 at the National Archives, Kew.

The MM was awarded the "Other ranks" not officers, but it is possible he was commissioned afterwards, I guess.

Thanks for all your replies. He wasn't married so I guess it went to his father as his mother had died some years beforehand. This makes it even more strange that my grandma didn't know anything about it as her grandfather lived with her when she was a child and died only a few years before she married. It would have definitely been sent to his father would it?
