Ive been reading up on Gorbachev's reform programme and have been trying to establish weather its failure was actually inevitable or not?
M.Gorbachev is a brave, intelligent and single-minded statesmen committed to the liberal reform of an old and decaying authoritarian system of which he himself is product. He trod a narrow path between the powerful vested interests of the old ruling elites and the radical opposition of the democrats. He failed in his way to see that the two opposing sides were set on a collision course, and that trying to mediate between 'em could only create enemies in both camps whilst winning few friends.Trained in the monolithic world of bureaucratic politics ,he failed to appreciate that his reforms could only succeed if he gained the support of a mass-based party or some other broad community of interests. He tried to impose his reforms from ABOVE ,bureaucratically, without attempting to build a popular base ,and that, more than anything else ,is the key to his political demise. In some way his fate is tragic.
