Regarding this phrase infamously uttered by the Pres. Bush - what or which "Axis of Evil" do you feel has done the most damage to the world? Or maybe has the potential to do the most damage in the world?

Now I guess you'll need to be considerate towards the ability of your particular "axis" to do damage to others around it i.e. an Axis from the Middle Ages might have relativly speaking had the ability to do great damage but only within 50 miles....

just wondering about how alliances have worked and which ones were "good for the cause" and which ones weren't (in a relative manner of course).

Still whatever the outcome of the thread I think we'll all remember the speech - "N. Korea, Iran and Iraq form an axis of evil...." great stuff.

If Greece had been good surely they'd still be doing Greek things e.g. Sparta et al. - I know they technically weren't Greek but see what I mean - I guess I shouldn't punish Greece for that but it's a magnet for Brits I don't like going there for a booze up....

My dislikes - Bulgaria, Albania, Portugal, Mexico, Indonesia, South Africa - not the best list I'm afraid - my "Friend of Democracy" are looking out for you....

Yeah - Rob has gotta go and seriously here there is an "Axis of Evil and poor judgement and corruption" in Africa that if it was anywhere else in the world esp. the mid-east we'd have done something about it - no doubt in my mind.

You said that an Axis of Evil could do damage in 50 miles during the Middle Ages. Does that mean you don't consider the Mongols to be an "Axis"?

(DL digs out flak jacket and kevlar helmet and begins to type....)

    Well then!

Where to begin? It all depends on your personal definition of evil. The obvious candidates are basically those who have made a public statement of some kind either threatening or condemning our (meaning the "western" world) way of life. Looking at this from a historical perspective, who would we look back in anger at? The obvious candidates for "Bond Villain of the year" are Ahmadinejad, with his "Wipe them off the map/we want peaceful nuclear power" contradiction, and of course the ever popular and (in)famous Osama bin Laden, everyone's most feared beard, for just generally being the inspiration if not the direct planner of mass murder the world over.

But how about looking outside the box? If you view the phrase from a different perspective, you could say that big business is the truly evil force in the world. Why? Simple really, it is all about consuming, which even the dullest SUV driving over-eater now accepts isn't exactly helping to ensure a nice stable future for mankind. So I suppose from an alternate viewpoint, you could say that Microsoft and major oil corporations are the axis of evil, since Microsoft are intent on controlling the world's access to information, and making Bill Gates even richer than he already is (if this is possible). Then the oil companies who have a confirmed interest in making sure that the oil price remains high, and demand also remains high, despite the now overwhelming evidence that we are damaging the world around us by our use of fossil fuels. So we see conflict in the Middle East, which to be fair we always have, but this time, the big boy in the schoolyard is involved. This conflict is causing the price of oil to rise to record levels and this is an indirect result of US foreign policy in the region. Coincidence that we have a US president who has significant financial interest in the oil business, both past and present? Is it?

So, my alternate "Axis of Evil" would be the Oil companies lobbyists in the US, and Microsoft!!!

To be more rational about it, it can be said that if there truly is an axis of evil, it isn't countries who are its constituent members, it is the two oldest evils on the Earth. Money and Religion. Money because it corrupts and taints everything it touches, and the phrase "Everything is for sale" has never been more true than today. Religion because despite being founded to guide Mankind in a positive direction, it has become a force for getting normal human beings to commit atrocious actions against their fellow man because they feel that God has morally obliged them to do so. Religion, and in particular its more distasteful cousin fundamentalism (of whatever faith you like) is total proof that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

    Cheers

To have an Axis you need 3!! smiley - smiley Sorry guys I just had tp post THIS ->

Bitter after being snubbed for membership in the "Axis of Evil," Libya, China and Syria today announced they had formed the Axis of Just as Evil, which they said would be "way eviler" than the Iran-Iraq-North Korea axis President Bush warned of in his State of the Union address.

Axis of Evil members immediately dismissed the new axis as having, for starters, a really dumb name.

"Right. They are Just as Evil ... in their dreams!" declared North Korean President Kim Jong Il. "Everybody knows we're the best evils ....I mean the best at being evil....We're the best."

Diplomats from Syria denied they were jealous over being excluded, although they conceded they did ask if they could join the Axis of Evil. "They told us it was full," said Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"An Axis can't have more than three countries," explained Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. "This is not my rule, it's tradition. In World War II you had Germany, Italy and Japan in the evil Axis. So you can only have three. And a secret handshake. Ours is wicked cool."

International reaction to Bush's Axis of Evil declaration was swift, as within minutes, France surrendered.

Elsewhere, peer-conscious nations rushed to gain triumvirate status in what has become a game of geopolitical chairs. Cuba, Sudan and Serbia said they had formed the Axis of Somewhat Evil, forcing Somalia to join with Uganda and Myanmar in the Axis of Occasionally Evil, while Bulgaria, Indonesia and Russia established the Axis of Not So Much Evil, Really, As Just Generally Disagreeable.

With the criteria suddenly expanded and all the desirable clubs filling up, Sierra Leone, El Salvador and Rwanda applied to be called the Axis of Countries That Aren't Necessarily the Worst But Won't Be Asked to Host the Olympics Anytime Soon; Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana formed the Axis of Countries That Hate That People Always Assume They're in Africa Because They're Not; while Canada, Mexico and Australia established the Axis of Nations That Are Actually Quite Nice But Secretly Have Nasty Thoughts About America.

"We have a waiting list as long as my arm," said Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

While wondering if the other nations of the world weren't perhaps making fun of him, a cautious Bush granted approval for most axes, although he rejected the establishment of the Axis of Countries Whose Names End in "Guay," accusing one of its members of filing a false application. Officials from Paraguay, Uruguay and Chadguay denied the charges.

Israeli officials, meanwhile, insisted they didn't want to join any axis, but privately, some world leaders said that's only because they haven't been asked.

I am puzzled over that one... ehehehehe !!!

What are 'greek things'? And why Sparta was not Greek? How come one enter Greece in the axis of evil? And Bulgaria and Albania - though having caused trouble in the Balcans (and been enemies of ours) I cannot say for sure that they did much more evil things than a really really large list of countries from west europe (up and down...) to far east - far west... I really did not get that "evil axis" term... there is no evil just conflicting interests...

Yup I sure would be out of a job! What a shame, I'd be able to find a job I actually enjoy doing!! As for BP, they are just as evil and twisted too my friend! Although, a strange occurence for you to ponder. I filled up last week at a BP station, and the receipt had the head office named as Kuwait Petroleum Ltd. Hmmmm....
