    Little-Hill,

A little. Born sometime between 1161 and 1167 AD in the Mongolian region of Lake Baikal. Named Temujin he was the son of the chieftain of a nomadic tribe (the Bjorjin). On the evidence of later, more established dates I'm inclined to believe the later date of 1167.

On the death of his father Yesugi at the age of nine (or thirteen, or somewhere inbetween), Temujin and his tribe seems to have wandered the steppes, living rough. (It is relatively certain that his father was poisoned by the Tartars).

Around the age of 16 or 17 married Bortei (of the Ungirrad tribe) who bore him three or four sons. (Due to Bortei being captured by the Merkid tribe there is some uncertainty over the father of Borteis first son).

At some point 1189?, possibly earlier 1183? depending upon when you decide he was born Temujin was recognised as the chieftain of the Bjorjin.

At this point Temujin pledged himself and his tribe to another tribe of Mongolia, possibly the Kerait or Kereyid (Nestorian Christians) to fight the Tartars. Over the next years he fought against the Tartars (who were Chinese backed) and virtually wiped them out. Due to his knack of winning he acquired a personal following of Mongolians from every tribe and became leader of these combined forces in around 1203 (most probably smoothing his path by having the previous khan (To'oril?) killed.

Those opposed to Temujin banded together and Temujin defeated them, thus establishing himself as Khan of Khans in 1206.

The vagueness of the dates is because the usual source of information on Genghis is traced back to the "Secret History of the Mongols" written probably in 1228 (or possibly 1240), this contradicts several Chinese sources. Various ages are given as to when his father died, some sources claim his father died when he was nine, others claim his father was still alive when he was thirteen.

    Cheers, hope it helps AA.

(Of course due to the vagueness of the sources, a lot of the above can be challenged, I'm not claiming it's totally correct by any means. My understanding of Genghis is through an offshoot of going back from the Mongol involvement during the Crusades in the Holy Land).

There is too much to tell in a shor tpost, but here are afew things about him.

    Original name Temujin.
He spent some years as a slave of a rival tribe before escaping.
Managed to unite the Mongol tribes and conquered the Chinese empire.
Through a combination of lightning fast attacks and terror, his empire spread quickly and reached the eastern parts of Europe.
Nobody knows for certain where his grave is.
