    Hi all,

I use the thread title as an example only but what would you have as a battlefield commander given today's almost equal fight between armour and warhead either (a) a squadron of battle-field attack helicoptors (and please state the model you'd pick and reasons)+ 4 infantry men per chopper for resup/local protection or (b) a squadron of MBT's + 4 infantry men per tank (please state model of tank you'd have and reasons).

I'd have to say I would pick the attack helicoptors and being sneaky I'd pick Mi-24's for troop mobility, heavy firepower and good speed/range for a chopper that can do all those things. You can use those choppers to attack the tanks and still carry the troops about to say protect the landing zones and still occupy objectives in a coup de' main.

yeah but are they? They are great for what they do but are (a) financially expensive, (b) the AAC Apache's when delivered could use their inboard pylons due to the worry that frags from a "hydra" pod would smash the tail-rotor, (c) I'm always a tad weary when "gunships" are seen as the answer to all the ills of the battlefield but is the answer a very expensive fleet of "gunships", a very expensive fleet of MBT's (which I can say seems better than a whole load of AH's) or something flexible.....the Mi-24 Hind smiley - smiley

Oh dear...black helicoptors, secret agents, weird lights in the sky smiley - smiley hah hah hah.

the Commanche looks the biz but like the F-22 will they ever get enough for them to be efficent and what will they do if they lose one or two? The OA-22 Osprey springs to mind here also.

its not even like we even need the f-22, JSF's eurofighters and all the next gen gear, as all we fight (unless the japs start using their sci-fi technology-phasers, proton torpedoes and turbolasers spring to mind) nowadays are rusty ol' migs and the odd mirage or f-104, and on the ground all weve gotta worry about are the outdated (though admittedly pretty decent) t-54's or the isreally versions of the challenger

I guess the idea is to have kit so good that no one would dare mess with you - but as we've found out you put enough led into the sky you can hit an F-117 (and this is an old bit of kit now), an F/A-18 was shot down by the Iraqi AF in Desert Storm and a good few AC-130's have been shot down over the years.
