Hi, I'm new to the board and need help with my university project.

I'm a first year Journalism student at the University of Central Lancashire and I'm doing a coursework project on different decades.

I need to interview a man who was conscripted at 18 to do post war service. Any stories or intresting facts about your life at that time would be very much appreciated and would help me a great deal.

If anyone has a story to tell me that relates to this, please get back to me.

    Many Thanks

    Peachydude

    Peachydude,

Don't know if this would help but my Dad was conscripted as "Hostilities Only" in 1946 at the age of 18. He's still alive (has most of his marbles intact) and lives within 30 miles of the University of Central Lancashire.

What do you want specifically? I can ask him a list of questions you've prepared, or, (and I'm not sure how this works), you could contact the board host (Lisa) and ask if my e mail address can be released to you (for which I give my permission) quoting this post and possibly arrange a personal interview.

Alternatively I do also know a person who was conscripted during National Service and served in Malaya.

    Cheers, hope it helps AA.

    Thank you, that's brilliant

Where exactly does your dad live, if you don't mind me asking? I would need to visit him before wednesday and I'm aware this would be short notice. If you were to ask a list of questions and then posted the answers on the forum, that would also be very acceptable. I would need the contact details, however just to verify that I hadn't made any of it up.

Get back to me when you can
    Cheers, Peachydude

If you do see him, could you ask him by tomorrow, if it's possible:

    1. What were the conditions like at that time?
    2. What service was he conscripted to do?
    3. Any interesting stories to tell, while you were doing the post war service?
    4. How did it feel to have to do post war service?
    5. did you enjoy it?
    6. What was your job, and how long did you have to do it for?
    7. At what age were uou conscripted to do the service?

    thank you so much

I was a British Army Regular from 1941 to 1948 so I didn't do National Service but those reading this thread may be interested in the fact that in Palestine around 1946/48 most of the English football team were out there doing NS. (It was not unusual when inter-unit football matches were arranged to find one or two famous players - usually on the other side and giving us a very hard time!)
Just imagine if today, NS was reintroduced and our current overpaid Prima Donnas were told that they were required to serve their country? (Of course this would only concern a few English footballers so I guess teams would then be made up of even more foreigners!).
Sorry. I should not encrouch on your thread, but you may find the bit about Palestine of interest.
You may find something of interest at www:ornebridgehead. Some of the biographys would be from men who were conscripted into the wartime services.

my dad was in Egypt/Palestine in 46-47 he went to lots of interesting places and met interesting people he also apparently shot some of them. He had a great time and looks back fondly of one engineering detail where they had to put a shark net up across a bay in the red sea the sargeant in charge grossly overestimated how long in would take so they could lie about on the beach playing football and smoking tabs for about a month.
My father in law was in Libya where he was cooking in a kitchen that was very hot so he just drank beer all the time to try and keep cool eventually made him rather unwell.
Sorry for banging - final bit my dad's friends opted not to go for the middle east but opted for the RAF and ended up spending most of their NS in a nissen hut freezing their nuts off and generally not having much fun.
