Don't hate the Irish but if you want to live in the RoI feel free to emigrate there - it can't be that good or all the people that went to the US would have come back.

The fact is so long as there is a majority mandate for the North to be governed either by a Westminster sanctioned Stormont or direct rule by Westminster Northern Ireland with stay as part of the Union.

    NewcF15,

Would that also be applicable to all the English people who went to the US and many other countries?

Presumably this hatred led them to work in England and even fight for the Empire in C18/19.

Whilst the 'English' rule of Ireland was often callous, it should always be set against the times: average life expectancy in England of 21, limited voting rights not just in Ireland and England but globally, with serfdom and slavery rife. When the Potato famine hit, the English did nothing, leaving the Irish to emigrate or starve - it was wrong but a laissez faire attitude that was prevalent at the time in Great Britain and the world. The over-reaction to the Easter uprising was also a mistake, counter-productive and extremely harsh but it was 1916 and fear of the Kaiser having a backdoor to Britain was a concern.

With the benefit of 21st century hindsight, the UK should have given Ireland Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Rule, although it still left the fact that there were more people in pro-GB Northern Ireland than in Eire.

And does the wrongs of the Protestant landowners in the south in the 19th century justify murdering Mountbatten, blowing up Bandsmen, crippling Lord Tebbit and his wife, and smashing knee caps in the 20th?

    Paul,

Difficult to say really as we are looking at different ends of the scale. I went last year for my 30th bday, so by in large it was round the pubs / clubs etc, which is expensive no matter what way you look at it.

But slightly different from a couple type of holiday!

However one night we went horse racing at Fairyhouse, which is obviously a racing track but its about 15ish miles north of Dublin as I recall

that was I think around 15-10 Euros to get in but a very enjoyable evening (if you like racing).

Other than that not too much I can suggest other than it's a great city to potter round, plenty of shops / cafe's etc if you want something more refined.

Scotish dont love them either,I think its because they tried to control many countries and they thought they were better than the rest of us.

I'm English. Its not just the Irish, everyone hates us. Seems fair to me, we oppressed everyone equally!

To be less frivolous, its true that England has for much of its history been an aggressive expansionist country. But then this is the way the world has always worked. It is just unfortunate for the Irish (and Scots and Welsh) to have a bigger more powerful neighbour.

Anyway, I'm glad that not all Irishmen hold a grudge, I worked in a pub in London with a very large Irish clientele and they were a great laugh. Top people!
