Reading to-day the episode of the re-occupation of the Rhineland by the Nazis in William Shirer's "The Collapse of the Third Republic", the French government by PM Sarraut, Georges Mandel, and Joseph Paul-Boncour wanted an invasion into the Rheinland when the Germans entered.
They were opposed by the French high-command, by the British Anthony Eden and the Belgians. Also the French right-wing press was firmly opposed, especially Le Matin, which made a whole front-page on Sunday about Hitler to save France from the Communist peril. And even the left-wing didn't cooperate.
"William Shirer ran early in the afternoon into General von Blomberg in the Tiergarten Berlin." "His face was ashen, his cheeks twitching". (During the invasion of the Rheinland)
I will give in an apart "http" the biography from Shirer. I have to leave immediately and will come back on it tomorrow.

As my thread seems not to have the expected interest (big smile) I start a new one: What if on 8 March 1936 the French had reoccupied the Rhineland, when a few nearly unarmed German companies had entered it on Saturday 7 March 1936.

Hi Paul
did u know that hitler said to his troops to withdraw at the site of a french policeman, he said it because his army was weak and didn't have the industrial power of the Rhineland.
hope it helps.
cheers Doc

Interesting premise - I think Hitler would have had his ambition stunted but I'm not sure if he'd been removed - maybe he would have sat back as President of the Reich and let someone else be CHancellor - another Nazi for sure but someone else so he couldn't take any more blame.
Once he did then I think German conservative reactionaries would have taken steps to remove the NSDAP and of course Hitler. Maybe a German Monarchist/Conservative would have taken over even maybe Kaiser Wilhelm II might have resumed the throne.
However whether or not this would have stopped the war I'm not sure - Germany still smarted from the loss of the Polish Corridor and this I think would have been the first action of an expansionist Germany rather than Rhineland-Sudetenland-Czechslovakia-Poland chain of events.
In respect of France from what I know through some reading on the inter-war years maybe a limited colonial war between France and the UK? Not sure but my understanding is that the great rivalry that existed from the late twenties could have spilt over and the UK popular press was rather certain this kind of war might have been good for the the country.

Is it true that when they went into the Rhineland the Germans didn't even provide their troops with any ammo?

Re: Message 6.
Gaiseric,
yes, I read it somewhere too. Have to seek it back. I am sure I will find out about the ammunition or not (smile), but too tired this evening to do it (other smile).
Kind regards,
Paul.

This is the best survey I found after more than five hours research on the internet:

re: Message 1.
I put such an emphasis on this event because it was in my opinion, from what I read, the only chance to stop Hitler when he had not yet an army capable to challenge France and Britain.
And had France occupied the Rhineland again, Hitler would had never had the chance to remilitarise so quickly because most of the industry was in the Rhineland?
I agree however that if you read the local circumstances in both France and Britain that period it was understandable that it turned out as it turned out.
