You have been listening to too much pseudo-history on TV recently. On the day of Trafalgar, Napoleon was close to Ulm, where he would obtain the surrender of Mack and 26,000 Austrians. Whiule Nap was undoubtedly obsessed with UK as the one nation, which could seriously halt his biggest ambitions, France could not in fact afford this whole expedition. As early as 1803, N was unhappy about Spain not paying its subsidies to the cost of the GA at Boulogne and it was only Ouvrard and the victory at Austerlitz, who/which saved the Bank of France from collapse. Over time, the costs of the European wars and then the garrisons drained N's finances away. had some invasion been possible - and don't forget that N did not settle things down until Tilsit in 1807, he would have lacked the straength to stay.

I'd concur with Barham's summation "I do not say they cannot come, I only say they cannot come by sea". Equally true IMO of Hitler's "invasion" plans.
