This might have been done to the death but what do people think the ultimate development has been in the arena of armed conflict?

Is it as easy as saying the hydrogen bomb? When you think about it probably not as this might have stopped the odd war but it hasn't stopped more wars from being fought.

I think my three ultimate developments are and in no order -

    1. The advent of the UH-1 helicoptor - the first real modern chopper that could really effect the outcome of battles large and small. And we've seen now what choppers can do in warfare - no more gliders and para's and they are fully flexible.

    2. For historical significance the advent of explosive shells that could also pierce armoured belts either in fixed positions or on ships - no more could you just build some thing that was near impregnible to a few cannon shots if the enemy could bring to bear these weapons.

    3. The rifle - a weapon system which meant that people could take an ordinary hill and protect it for as long as they had ammo from larger forces. I know you might say they could have done if they had bows and arrows but this was real power and could outrange even the best archer. And when you think about the developments based on the rifle have formed the main armaments of the key figure on the battlefield - the infantryman.

Any comments, thoughts, considerations or criticisms?

A Helicopter does not make Para's obsolete. How long would it take to deploy the 82nd Airborne Division verses the 101st Airmoble.

    Cheers, Matt.

The development of the proximity fuse was more, or at the very least, as important as armor piercing arty.

    Cheers, Matt.

The weapon in front is only as good as the man behind it.

The weapon in front is only as good as the man behind it.Β  i see. so the ultimate development in warfare has been the human being. yes, i guess that's pretty hard to argue against as well.

To expand. A 150 or so years ago, the infantry man would be trained to stand there and receive fire. Today he is trained to think. 90 years ago, he would follow his officer over the top of s trench and into No Mans land without question. Today as I said although he will obey orders, he thinks. So as war has developted, so has the P. B.I. The man on horse back has gone from riding into a charge to handling tanks costing millions. The sailor from standing ship to ship, to being able to deal with targets miles away. Yes, I would go for the man.
