who shot michael collins?

  eamonn de velara had no good reason to have michael collins assassinated. he knew only too well the military genius that collins was. michael collins would have been a major asset to the establishment of an irish military/ security force. instead it was more likely that the british security forces had him assassinated.

  Well, there's a conspiracy theory if ever I've seen one. The British would have loved to have had Collins killed before 1921, but following the signing of the Treaty he was the best hope for peace in ireland as far as the british government was concerned. After all, Collins had accepted the necessity of a two-state solution (at least for the time being), whereas de Valera and the anti-Treaty Republicans claimed that they wished to carry on the war with britian to ensure a 32-county Ireland. Given these circumstances, for the British to have assasinated Collins would have been totally counter-productive.
  
  The Civil War was vicious, 77 Republicans had been executed by their former colleagues (far more than the British executed in 1916 or at any time in the history of Kilmainham gaol). Dev and the other Republicans saw Collins as betraying the Repubican ideal and that was why he was killed, not some British conspiracy.
