Seeing a news item on the new type 45 destroyers they seemed to be both pretty big, 8,500 tonnes? and broadbeam. I wondered how they compared in size with WW2 heavy and light cruiers.

thatd be bout right 4 a light cruiser i think
A bit smaller than heavy cruisers, very similiar in size to the light Leander class cruiser (best known probably Achilles and Ajax). I have the Type 45 at 7,350 tonnes (but not sure if this is fully laden or not).
They should be a bit less cramped, crew for the Type 45 is approx 190, the Leanders had a complement of 550.
Interesting what you find out though, never realised the Achilles (as did The Cumberland) played herself in The Battle of the River Plate although at the time she was the RIN Dehli.
Cheers AA.

AA
thanks for the information.
Do you know if the type 45 could be described as broadbeam, she looked it on TV.
I remmemeber a debate about whether the RN should have broad beam warships to be able to pack more radar and weapon systems on them many years ago.
regards
Tim

I'm afraid you are now ascribing to me more knomledge of the terms of naval arcitecture than I possess.
They certainly look long in the beam to these landlubbers eyes.
